Repositioning and Refocusing for Expansion
Texchem’s Packaging Division becomes the Polymer Engineering Division

Texchem’s Packaging Division recently underwent a change of name to become the Polymer Engineering Division; a symbolic move that heralds a new era of drive and innovation.

‘Humble beginnings’ would best sum up the genesis of the Packaging Division in 1979. Back then, the Division was primarily involved in production of basic vacuum formed packaging including egg trays and trays for food stuff. Fast forward 32 years, and the Division has shifted into overdrive, producing high-end industrial plastic packaging and precision injection mouldings for the electronics industry. Constant development in new technologies and capabilities has firmly established Texchem’s Packaging Division as the market leader in South East Asia for thermoformed packaging and injection moulded products.

The intensely competitive nature of the global industrial packaging industry has meant that the Division has continually evolved for excellence. Over the last two years the Division took the critical decision to reposition itself and refocus its core businesses to maximise new opportunities and consolidate existing revenue streams.

Today, after considerable investment in new technologies and R&D, the Division has deepened its capabilities to offer clients a range of sophisticated polymer engineering solutions - in layman’s terms, the Division has strengthened its ability to apply engineering capabilities to polymers (plastics). Hence the name change.

According to Yap Kee Keong, Division President and CEO, “Our old name is no longer accurate as we have moved beyond providing packaging solutions. Now the Division is not only able to utilise polymers in complex applications in the consumer electronic and hard disk drive industry but also the seminconductor and medical devices industries. Our name change reflects this new direction.”

The semiconductors and medical devices industry have been identified by the Division for their long-term growth prospects. “For example, the Polymer Engineering Division is among only a handful of global organisations that design and manufacture wafer shippers,” explained Yap.

Although the Division has invested heavily in polymer R&D and the non-packaging business sector, the traditional plastic packaging business will remain as core business of the Division. The Division’s commitment to its roots is best exemplified by its continuous effort in the traditional market segment.

The Division’s name change is a significant milestone in Texchem’s history and aptly reflects the Division’s expanding capabilities as well as its ambition to grasp new business opportunities based on decades of experience and expertise.
